Tomorrow there'll be more of us...Javier Muñoz will officially take over for Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton on July 11. Miranda's former alternate in the title role will be joined by Lexi Lawson, who steps in for Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton in the Tony-winning tuner.
Muñoz is scheduled to lead seven shows a week; Michael Luwoye will now appear in the titular role once weekly. Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. exited the production along with Miranda and Soo on July 9; he is set to be officially replaced by two-time Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon as Aaron Burr in mid-August. In the meantime, the role will be covered by understudies Andrew Chappelle, Sydney James Harcourt and Austin Smith.
Muñoz, who recently fought a battle with cancer, also covered for Miranda in In the Heights, before officially taking over the lead role of Usnavi on Broadway and later on the national tour. Lawson performed in the first national tour of In the Heights in the leading role of Vanessa. Luwoye makes his Broadway debut in Hamilton; he was recently seen off-Broadway in Invisible Thread.
Directed by Thomas Kail and featuring a book, music and lyrics by Miranda, Hamilton is inspired by the book Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow and is running at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The current cast also includes Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Rory O’Malley as King George, Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton, Tony winner Daveed Diggs as Marquis De Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson and Tony winner Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler.
